Slow Tri Is it Friday yet? That is great! K Williams Well-known member. Now if only Great Eastern Cutlery would make something similar in their Northfield line! Did you keep the blades cool while grinding to keep their temper? Nice job! Stinger4me Well-known member. Creative idea and skillful workmanship, you do great work. I never would have thought of that. SpeedyD Well-known member. Great job, very skillful. Here is a photo of the tamper end. K Williams, interesting you should mention GEC.
I send an email earlier this week inquiring about a pipe knife, describing this mod to a Stockman, in case it might spark an interest. I have a Tidioute Stockman and have been contemplating doing this same mod to it. Hmmmmm I do not have a water cooled grinder but I made very light cuts and dipped the knife in water between grinding passes.
It took nearly an hour to do all the grinding. I believe the temper was not lost. The pick is a bit shorter than I would prefer but that was the length of the blade. It works fine in the pipes that I have. A chimney would require the knife body to go into the bowl. It will fit, just will block your view of the pick. The scraper is also slightly shorter than optimum but again, it will do it's job in all the pipes that I have.
My first love might just have been knives. My initial gut response to this was absolute horror! I kept coming back to the original post What I now see is the product of ingenuity, imagination, and skills. You saw the diamond in the rough and created your own unique tool that has vaguely made me envious. I have to admit I have thought of this I will one day scratch that itch. Beautiful work! You can always buy another unadulterated Case stockman, and keep it original Just noticing the before pic of the tamper end.
Craig Thompson said:. Stockman knife before modification:. Click to expand Well mongo, I have same emotional struggle. I agonized for a loooong time before starting this model. But I was not certain it would work out or totally defile as you said this really nice knife until it was done. So far I think it was worth loosing a Stockman and gaining a quite nice pipe knife. The flat tamper end seems to work well even though there is a gap for the pick blade. JustScott Well-known member.
Nicely done! I love it when people tweak things to make them work better. We've all used the wrong tool, or not-quite-the-right tool and done workarounds for the not-quite-right bits, but taking an existing tool and turning it into exactly what you need is just such a useful skill, and so satisfying. I have been using this tool now for a few weeks and am finding it to work quite well. The primary reason that I modified this knife was to have 4-tool pipe tool: tamper, pick, scraper and knife blade.
I have only seen 3-tools combined in a pipe knife. At this point in my pipe smoking I have not delved into plug tobaccos but I wanted that capability for when I do. A knife blade is also useful for opening associated packaging and such. The tamper end works just fine. The scraper also works as expected.
The sharp edge scrapes effectively and the rounded end also can scrape. The handles are smooth tobacco bone with brass liners, nickel silver pins, nickel silver slant 'R' bolsters, as well as a nickel silver shield. It includes a pipe cleaner tool. It's 3.
